Does health insurance cover psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Yes. TP is a guideline-based approach and is covered in full by statutory health insurance providers. The prerequisites are a mental illness of clinical significance and a therapist with a statutory health insurance license.

The Process

Short-term therapy and long-term therapy are approved through different procedures: first the psychotherapy consultation, then two to four trial sessions, then the application. Short-term therapy of up to 24 sessions is approved without an expert opinion. For long-term therapy (60 sessions, extendable to 100), a report to an independently appointed expert reviewer is required, not to the health insurance provider itself.

If No Therapy Spot Is Available

The appointment service center at 116117 arranges consultation appointments. If the search remains unsuccessful within a reasonable time, treatment with a therapist without a statutory health insurance license can be paid for through the reimbursement procedure.

If the Insurer Declines

You can file an appeal against a denial. Your therapist will help you with this.

Privately insured people should clarify reimbursement individually with their insurer. For inpatient treatment, separate rules apply, which depend on the insurer and the payer. Costs for self-pay patients are based on the fee schedule.

My own service lies outside the statutory health insurance system. This service is psychological counseling, not psychotherapy. It is not intended to diagnose, cure, or alleviate illnesses. You pay for the online counseling in German via video yourself, without an application or an expert reviewer. In doing so, I look at relationship patterns and early formative experiences from a depth psychology perspective.
