Who Is on the Other End

My name is Aris Hägermann, and I am a licensed psychological psychotherapist. I have been working in my own practice since 2016, and before that, I spent about four years working in psychosomatic clinics with several hundred patients. In counseling, my way of working is shaped by psychodynamic psychotherapy and Gestalt therapy. When past wounds continue to have an impact, I work in a trauma-informed way.

Since early 2024, I’ve been traveling a lot and counseling exclusively online; this means you’ll need to adjust to different time zones from time to time.

Anyone writing from abroad doesn’t have to explain to me first what it’s like to be at home in two worlds and not fully at home in either.

I’ve been seeing my own therapist online for some time now, and I find it enriching. During the pandemic, I saw with my own patients whether the format holds up even when things get difficult.

The result is described elsewhere: whether online psychotherapy is a good idea.

What Brings People to Online Psychological Counseling

  • A burden that is currently overshadowing everything else
  • A decision that no one can make for you
  • Exhaustion that even a vacation can no longer relieve
  • Conflicts in a relationship, within the family, or at work
  • A breakup, a loss, or a major career change
  • The feeling of walking alongside your own life
  • The struggle of constantly switching between two worlds while living abroad
  • Concern for a family member who doesn’t want to accept help
  • Patterns you've long since figured out, yet still find yourself repeating
  • Guidance before you decide to undergo psychotherapy

Hardly anyone gets in touch at the first sign of a problem. Usually, the following phrase comes first: “I should be able to handle this on my own.” People looking for online psychological counseling have often been trying to handle it on their own for a long time. Here’s where the line between counseling and treatment lies: the difference between psychological counseling and psychotherapy.

How a Counseling Session Works

A single session lasts 50 minutes; an in-depth session lasts 100 minutes. We meet in a secure virtual consultation room via an encrypted and certified European video platform. You can choose to keep your camera on or off, and you decide this anew from session to session.

If video isn’t right for you, the counseling takes place over the phone. Some people speak more freely when they can look out the window while talking. It doesn’t take much: a stable connection and a place where you won’t be disturbed.

Every counseling session is covered by the legal duty of confidentiality, not just by a pseudonym in a chat window. No diagnosis is made that ends up in your medical record, and no report is sent to a health insurance provider. You decide how many counseling sessions you’ll have, not an expert reviewer.

This service is psychological counseling, not psychotherapy. It is not intended to diagnose, cure, or alleviate illnesses.

What does “initial consultation” mean?

The initial consultation is a 50- or 90-minute counseling session for which a fee is charged. We’ll get to know each other and begin working on your concerns right away. Afterward, you can decide whether you’d like to schedule additional sessions.

Do I need to book a package afterward?

You can leave it at a single session or book additional appointments individually. A package is another option if you’ve decided to have multiple sessions. It begins after the initial consultation, which is billed separately.

How do I prepare?

You don’t need to write anything out in detail. If you’d like, you can jot down what’s on your mind and what you hope to get out of the session. For the video call, you’ll need a quiet place, a stable internet connection, and a camera and microphone.

What does the counseling agreement cover?

Before your first paid session, you will receive information regarding services, fees, payment, canceling appointments, and confidentiality. The agreement also explains how personal data is handled and how the relationship is terminated. You will decide on additional sessions and packages separately.

Does health insurance cover the costs?

This counseling service is available to self-pay clients. I do not bill health insurance for this service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a video session work?

My online psychological counseling sessions take place via an encrypted, certified European video platform. You can sit wherever you feel comfortable, and we’ll talk just as we would in an in-person session at a practice.

The difference: no commute, no one in the waiting room, and you decide for yourself how much space counseling gets in your everyday life.

How much does it cost?

The three counseling packages are listed further up on this page, along with their prices and the number of sessions included. There is no membership or subscription; you pay only for what you’ve booked.

What other providers charge for counseling, and where the differences come from, is explained here: what psychological counseling costs.

What is the difference between this and psychotherapy?

Online psychological counseling is not guideline-based psychotherapy and is not covered by statutory health insurance. Conversely, this means: no application, no diagnosis in your medical record, and no waiting time for a spot. Anyone who needs long-term, diagnostically based treatment generally needs a practice with a statutory health insurance license.

I am licensed, but I still offer counseling through my online practice because it’s the more direct way to address many concerns. This is explained in detail in my article on distinguishing between counseling and psychotherapy.

How do I make an appointment?

Send me an email or use the contact form. I usually get back to you within 24 hours, and the initial consultation typically takes place within a few days. There is no questionnaire or intake form to fill out beforehand.

We’ll talk, and then you decide whether it turns into counseling.

Information on Acute Crises in Germany

In acute crises, in cases of danger to yourself, or when close psychiatric care is needed, online counseling is not sufficient. In such cases, please contact the emergency number 112, the on-call medical service at 116 117, or a hospital near you.
