The TP can be is less effective than behavioral therapy. This makes it difficult to compare results across studies and is one reason why the Evidence base is thinner for individual fault patterns.
Interpretations are difficult to verify. If the patient agrees, this is taken as confirmation. If the patient disagrees, the disagreement may be interpreted as resistance. When this is done uncritically, the theory becomes immune to refutation.
Experts also disagree on whether severe disorders are more likely to result from arise from unconscious conflicts or from deficits that developed early in life. The treatment technique depends on the answer; it has not yet been decided.
The model of structural levels is also often presented with greater certainty than is supported by empirical evidence.
