A breakup comes in waves. Just when you thought it was over, it comes back. Often, relief and despair occur on the same day—sometimes even within the same hour. The urge to write one more time still creeps in, even though your mind has long known why it’s over. Anger also surfaces—toward the other person or toward yourself. In between lie weeks during which everyday life simply carries on, almost mechanically, as if you were watching it from the outside.
The end of a shared future that existed only in one’s imagination often weighs more heavily than the end of the relationship as it actually was: a vision of a life that never happened and yet is still missed.
