Initial Consultation
50 minutes
We’ll focus on what’s on your mind right now and discuss what might help you move forward.
Only psychotherapy has its own professional law. Psychotherapy falls under the practice of healing: it serves to diagnose, cure, or alleviate “clinically significant disorders” using scientifically recognized approaches, as stipulated by the Psychotherapists Act (PsychThG). The professional title “psychotherapist” is protected by law.
Coaching and counseling fall outside this practice of healing, and the law itself opens this door: “Activities that deal only with working through or overcoming social conflicts, or with other purposes outside the practice of healing, are not part of the practice of psychotherapy.” In contrast, there is no professional law and no state licensing for the terms “coach,” “counselor,” or “therapist” alone. Anyone may call themselves by these terms; even so, only those who are licensed to do so may treat illnesses.
What makes the difference for you is the goal, and this is where coaching and counseling overlap: Coaching usually aims for a professional outcome, while counseling focuses on clarification and understanding without reference to illness, and both rely on self-reflection. Psychotherapy treats a clinically significant disorder. The label says little about quality, but a lot about the rules behind it. The duty of confidentiality depends on the person’s qualifications, not on the label. I myself am licensed and offer counseling unrelated to illness.

The packages consist only of 50-minute sessions. The initial consultation is booked and billed separately. If this arrangement doesn’t work out for you, I’ll refund you the amount for the remaining package sessions.
The initial consultation is a 50- or 90-minute counseling session for which a fee is charged. We’ll get to know each other and begin working on your concerns right away. Afterward, you can decide whether you’d like to schedule additional sessions.
You can leave it at a single session or book additional appointments individually. A package is another option if you’ve decided to have multiple sessions.
You don’t need to write anything out in detail. If you’d like, you can jot down what’s on your mind and what you hope to get out of the session. For the video call, you’ll need a quiet place, a stable internet connection, and a camera and microphone.
Before your first paid session, you will receive information regarding services, fees, payment, canceling appointments, and confidentiality. The agreement also explains how personal data is handled and how the relationship is terminated.
This counseling service is available to self-pay clients. I do not bill health insurance for this service.
