Initial Consultation
50 minutes
We’ll focus on what’s on your mind right now and discuss what might help you move forward.
Homesickness after moving abroad is a normal reaction to the absence of familiar things: people, language, and things taken for granted that no one notices at home. The fact that the longing for the old life remains doesn’t in itself indicate whether the decision was right or wrong. Homesickness can subside over time and return in waves, for example during holidays, at family events, or in difficult phases in the new daily life; its course varies from person to person.
It warrants attention when the wave doesn’t subside: persistent low mood, withdrawal even from new social interactions, sleep problems, the feeling of just going through the motions, or when alcohol is meant to fill the gap. In such cases, a medical or psychotherapeutic assessment is also called for, and a conversation is worthwhile before the withdrawal becomes entrenched.
Persistent homesickness is often the result of a combination of factors: the longing itself, the stress of the new daily life, and sometimes an older issue that has only grown louder abroad. Counseling in your own language is a place where you can sort things out and figure out what kind of help is right for you, especially when the familiar words are missing.

The initial consultation is a 50- or 90-minute counseling session for which a fee is charged. We’ll get to know each other and begin working on your concerns right away. Afterward, you can decide whether you’d like to schedule additional sessions.
You can leave it at a single session or book additional appointments individually. A package is another option if you’ve decided to have multiple sessions.
You don’t need to write anything out in detail. If you’d like, you can jot down what’s on your mind and what you hope to get out of the session. For the video call, you’ll need a quiet place, a stable internet connection, and a camera and microphone.
Before your first paid session, you will receive information regarding services, fees, payment, canceling appointments, and confidentiality. The agreement also explains how personal data is handled and how the relationship is terminated.
This counseling service is available to self-pay clients. I do not bill health insurance for this service.
