Depth psychology: Goals a therapy and what it is intended to change

What We're Working On

Depending on the underlying cause of the malfunction, TP pursues two equally important approaches.

Conflict-Oriented: An unconscious conflict that is affecting your current life situation is understood and addressed. Repressed emotions become accessible again. This is achieved through Clarification, Interpretation, and Working Through.

Structure-oriented: Impaired skills are strengthened, such as the ability to distinguish between and tolerate emotions, control impulses, and regulate self-esteem and relationships. Which path is right for you?, becomes apparent during the diagnostic evaluation at the start of treatment.

What is explicitly not the goal

Personality transformation is not one of the goals of TP. It may occur as a side effect, but it is not the intended outcome. Anyone seeking to work through underlying conflicts and their life story will find what they’re looking for at the analytical psychotherapy or psychoanalysis Right.

It is precisely this limitation that makes the TP shorter, more predictable, and accessible to more people.
