Depth Psychology: Who It's Suited For

TP TOPICS Von Haegermann 3 min. reading time July 2026

TP is appropriate when unconscious conflicts or recurring relationship patterns contribute to the symptoms. It is used with adults as well as with children and adolescents.

Typical Applications

Depressive Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, somatoform and functional symptoms, adjustment disorders, personality disorders, as well as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders, even complex ones.

If the structure is more severely compromised

TP is an option in cases of pronounced structural impairments, such as difficulties distinguishing and tolerating emotions, controlling impulses, or maintaining stable relationships. It is then conducted in a structure-oriented manner: less exploratory, more supportive, and with limited regression.

The ability to engage in self-reflection is also not a strict prerequisite for admission. When this ability is limited, developing it is one of the goals of treatment.

Borders

In cases of acute suicidal ideation and during acute psychotic episodes, crisis intervention takes priority; psychotherapy can follow afterward. In cases of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Behavioral therapy is the treatment of choice.

Whether psychotherapy is the right fit will be determined during the psychotherapy consultation.
